Still not done...
So I was hoping to have some color work done so I can show here but it seems that I can't work fast enough. Sometimes I think if I didn't have to eat, sleep, etc. I would get so much more done but we are only human so thats not possible. I did get 15 new sketches penciled out so they are ready for inks and color. Hopefully should have some colored stuff to show between tomorrow and the 1st. Want to have all 15 pieces done so I can get some prints made before I leave for baltmore comic con on Oct 10-11. Stay tuned.

Bussiness Card Finished ^_^
Final finished my business card. Took me a entire day to complete. I was original going to do full color but I have not used photoshop in 8 months and forgot how to do everything, plus my skills are lacking, I'm on a time crunch and my characters are primarily greyscale anyways so I decided to color them in greyscale rather then full color. Hope you like. I'm planning on sending these off today to get printed. I hope they turn out ok. I will be taking these with me to Baltimore Comic Con ^_^

Business Card w.i.p
So I know I'm tired when I have a cup of coffee which usually keeps me up for hours on end and I still end up passing out. I meant to post something alot earlier. Trying to get so much done before Baltimore Comic con. It can become overwhelming... This is a work in progress for a long overdue new business card featuring my 3 original character from 3 original comics I'm working on. I want to get some clean pencils done and color it in photoshop and add text. Hoping to get that done in the next day or 2.

(>_<) ....................
Current State of mind.....annoyed.
Warning: This is a rant, beware....
So I thought I would have my business card done by now but it still isn't done and the convention is nearly 2 weeks away and I also need to get new art works done by then so I can take them with me to the convention.... The reason why I'm not done with these things is because I'm writing Psyche Papers for a college course. The funny thing is that I'm not in college. I graduated art school last year and a big factor of me going to this type of art school is that I did not need to take core classes like Psyche (I have a short attention span, seriously).
I'm practically taking my mother's Psyche college course, according to her I write papers very well and fast. I feel like I'm in school with her, seriously. She is paying me on the side but you can't buy your time back you know. I'm trying to be nice because she is about 6 months away from getting her bachelor's degree which she needs to start up her own nutrition business. She works 2 jobs and goes to school full time so I know she is struggling so I did not mind helping her out but I am starting to get annoyed at this point. I know absolutely nothing about Psyche. I'm basically reading these long a$$ articles that make absolutely no sense about all these psychologist and writing about them within an hour of reading these ridiculously long and wordy articles. Its so frustrating especially when I have things that I want to get done such as several art jobs and getting ready for Baltimore comic con.
So I'm sitting here listening to some super heavy metal music by Darkest Hour which I don't usually listen to unless I'm really pissed off. I'm about to read, study, and write a 4 page long b.s. paper about Darwin and "Natural Selection" (>_<) (>_<) (>_<) Sigh....hopefully this will be over soon....

Marla Bea Breast Cancer Charity Auction
Although I'm pretty busy with trying to get art work and funds together for Baltimore Comic Con next month (oct. 10-11). I decided to draw a brand new illustration featuring Zatanna for the Marla Bea Breast Cancer Charity auction that will be held on Oct. 12 on ebay. Please review the following link for more info: http://www.marlabeabenefit.com/
I really like how this drawing came out and is kind or reminiscent of my own original character. I hope zatanna will find a happy home and raise a good amount of money for breast cancer treatment. :)
Please excuse the poor scan. The drawing was to big to fit in my scanner and the border was cropped drastically :(

Switching Gears...
So I've been switching gears here and there meaning drawing different stuff. This is a recently finished commission featuring the marx brothers. I had alot of fun with this even though its not something I normally draw (semi-realilistic style art) but I feel that its important that we as artist try to different things here and there to break up the manotony and in turn we could get new ideas. Expect to see more different art from me soon.

I recommend...
So while on the topic of improving shortcomings I wanted to recommend a couple of figure pose books. To be honest when I first saw these books I thought they were ridiculous with all the poses and stuff but the more I looked at them and used it the more they came in handy. In fact I use them almost everyday when I'm drawing. They are great reference and include male and females poses, gun poses, sword poses, running, jumping, etc. I highly recommend all 3 of the, if it wasn't for these great reference books then I probably would not have been able to draw quicksilver running properly:

Drawing Boys + a Koala
So as I mentioned in the previous entry that I have problems with drawing guys. lol, more often then most they tend to look like girls but its something that I'm working on and is a work in progress. I've come to find out that since I will be drawing more male characters I'm going to have to use a ton of reference to get anatomy and stuff right.
Luckily I was able to pick up a commission for a 3 card spread featuring the Marx Brothers. I didn't know them by name but once I saw the reference of them I knew who they were. I'm really happy about this project. Its something new and different and I get practice in drawing male figures. The final version will be in ink and grey scale markers. Stay Tuned ^_^

Shortcomings
My shortcomings, artistically speaking are perspective and backgrounds, male figures, hands, and sequentail art. These are some things I know I need to work on. Do you have shortcomings with your art? As I said before I'm planning on entering a international manga contest. I'm planning on starting the pages in Mid-October. That will give me 2.5 months to finish about 12 grey tone pages. I hope I can pull it off, I'm getting nervous (@_@)

Getting things done
I never drew venom before and I didn't even know there was a She-Venom until recently. Currently waiting to here back about the deviant art ad. I'll post here the results. Also currently finishing up some projects. I figure that I should get things done now rather then procrastinate but I feel this applies to anything and not just art work. Good day.

Deviant Art Ads
So I was chatting with a fellow artist on deviant art and they told me that deviant art has a ad service and its well worth the money spent. The least expensive one is $20.00 for 500 guaranteed hits to you page. I think I will try it and figured I would share the info. The extra traffic couldn't help. Apparently all you do is click the little arrow next to your user name on deviant art and click "our services."

Baltimore Comic Con
So as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago I will be at Baltimore Comic Con in artist alley with my friend Arie Monroe. Its our first time there, I'm really excited about it. If your going to the con please stop by and say Hi (^_^) If your interested in a commission prior to the con to pick up at the con then we can arrange that. You can send me a email here: sherryleak@gmail.com
Still trying to get funds together to make it to the convention as well as make new art, its so overwhelming. 6_6
Here is what I'm trying to accomplish within the next 4 weeks before the convention:
1) Take private commissions to raise the remaining funds needed for the con. Still need about $500 (-_-)
2) Create New artworks for the con.
3) Create a New business card.
4) Create and submit new art work for the Marla Brea Breast Cancer Charity--- ^_^ Glad I can help.
5) Get started on the latest official card set I'm working on: Dean Yeagle's Mandy
----Sounds like a lot right? (-_-) I wish I had super speed or there was more hours in the day. Well lets see how much of these I can get accomplished....

How do I improve my art work & get people to see my art?
How do I improve my art work & get people to see my art?
This is another question I get asked often. I will post a link to this in the faq as well so you can refer too.
Basically as far as getting better with your drawing skills your going to want to be drawing everyday. It does sound easier said then done but it requires alot of discipline. If you have somewhere online to upload your art you should be uploading something at least once a day if not more. This will drive traffic to your art. Try to draw a variety of things. This is something I have to work on personally. Drawing from life is best but magazines could work too. Check out other peoples art and get tips and ideas from them, don't swipe images of course. Try drawing everyday for 30 days at least. You'll see a huge improvement. There is several places online to get people to see your work. I posted a couple links in the FAQ, you can also do a internet search to find more. Also try going to art shows, galleries, and conventions. I hope this was helpful (^-^)

People will talk S**T about you + Recently finished commissions
Sorry about the bluntness of the title but its something that I had to get off my chest. Basically it doesn't matter if your the best artist in the world or if you still have things you need to work on. People will still find ways to try to bring you down. Trust me I know from personal experience.
What I don't understand is why these people say negative things about your art work when their not even artist and they don't know what they are talking about and more then likely they don't know how to give a proper critique of your work other then saying something like "oh well their art sucks" or their "art is awful." Like seriously grow up and get a life.
Basically when it comes down to it don't let these a$$holes get to you. I even have to tell myself this. So for all you artist out there keep doing what your doing and strive for the top, I'll do the same (^-^)
Ok so now onto recently finished commissions....
Above is a batman/catwoman commission that I finished up. To be honest I've only drawn these 2 characters once before. I like how this came out. Next up is a sketch card commission of Magik from New mutants. I never drew her before either but I like her character design. I just picked up some other commissions that I will be posting here too. They include: The Marx Brothers 3 card spread in inks and gray scale markers, 8 quick sketch commissions of various characters, and a yoda sketch card. Thanks for stopping by. If you would like to request a commission then please feel free to email me here: sherryleak@gmail.com

F.A.Q.
***New Question & Answer added 09/08/09
So I've been getting alot of random questions ranging from: "How was your experience at the Joe Kubert School of Art" to "How do you sell you art work online" etc. etc. etc.
It was suggested to me that I should just make a faq (Frequently Asked Questions) so everyone can refer to before asking me questions. I don't mind helping out others but I felt it would be easier to post most frequently asked questions and answers here.
This will be chalk full of very useful information for artist and will contain links. I'll update periodically when I think of anything new. I'm going to post this blog post under my "about me" section on the left side of this blog for easy access. So on to the FAQ:
*How was your experience at the Joe Kubert School?:
The Joe Kubert School was pretty good in my opinion. I learned sequential art pretty well but as far as other aspects of the school goes they were pretty behind in the times. There is 10 classes that you have to take and you must complete all the assignments. So the workload is pretty demanding as in the real art world. Tution is pretty expensive too. These are all just my opinions. Feel free to get other past kubert students feedback. Overall I did learn alot from kubert school because I came there without knowing anything at all about drawing comics.
*How do you get people to see your work?:
Put yourself out there. Go to art shows, galleries, conventions, network with all types of artist online and in your community. Upload artwork everyday weather its to your blog, website, or deviantart.
*How do you get Commissions and sell you art work?:
Very similar to the previous question. You have to put yourself out there and upload art everyday so you make a presence online and in your community. Here are some links you may find useful for networking with other artist, receiving critiques, and possibly getting work online-

http://sherryleak.blogspot.com/2009/08/sailor-chibi-chibi-moon-prismacolor.html
*How do you deal with constructive criticism that isn't so constructive?: (this is a blog link from a previous post with very extensive information)
http://sherryleak.blogspot.com/2009/08/constructive-criticism-vs-being-cruel.html
*Do you ever get discouraged from drawing? Do you ever feel like you picked the wrong career choice?
Yes, actually quite frequently latley to be honest. This is why I feel its important to surround ourselves with other artist and postive people in general so we can encourage each other.
*Where do you get inspiration to draw?
I look at various types of art work to get ideas and tips on approving my own art. Talking to other artist and jotting down notes. Simply looking through magazines, newspapers, or observing your enviorment can give you different ideas for new art work. Traveling is good to, step out of the box and observe the enviorment of different states or countries. Your sure to get tons of ideas. Be sure to jot them down on paper or sketch them out in a sketch book.

The Takeover
Hi! Sorry about the late post; I wanted to get this drawing done in order to post it for today.
So I'm sure you probably already heard about Disney and Marvel Merging companies. This drawing was the 1st thing to come to mind for me (-_-). I would be lying if I said I was thrilled about this merge. Looks like big big big changes will be coming to marvel very very very soon. What are your thoughts on the Merge of the 2 companies?
